Meet the Finalists: Kayla & Mark

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Our final couple in the running for the Dream Date, Luxury for Less Giveaway are Kayla and Mark.

These two are high school sweethearts! Mark was a senior and Kayla was a freshman, when I asked Mark how he knew she was the one he said, “I saw her, that was all I needed.”

These two haven’t had it easy, after high school, Mark went away to school and Kayla stayed here to finish her degree at The Sage Colleges of Albany. After completing college, Mark joined the United States Navy where he is currently stationed in San Diego, California.

One night, in late November, Kayla and Mark were sitting around his house watching Hook with Mark’s family.  In the middle of the movie his brother and his brother’s girlfriend suddenly got up and said “we’re going to the store.”  A little while later, Mark got a phone call and said, “come on we have to go to the store.”  Kayla was aggravated because she was just getting to the good part of the movie and couldn’t understand why Mark couldn’t just call his brother and ask him to pick up something for him.  She went along with him and got mad at him when he started driving the wrong way.  They finally ended up a spot that they like to claim as “their spot”.  It is by the river in Amsterdam, it’s the place that Mark first told Kayla he loved her, it’s also the place where he surprised her with presents on her sixteenth birthday.  Kayla didn’t want to get out because it was chilly that night so joking around she locked Mark out of the car.  That’s when she realized there were candles lit at their spot, 3 long stem white roses and white rose petals everywhere.  On top of the rose petals was a card addressed to Kayla, she opened it and it said “I love you. Love ,Mark” Then she saw that it said, “Turn around for your present.” when she did, Mark was there on one knee with the ring and asked her to marry him.  Of course, she said yes!!

Their dream wedding doesn’t have a lot of details, they just want a fun and memorable day that can be about celebrating their love.

When I asked them why they should win this wedding giveaway, they answered “Commitment. Despite every hardship and obstacle we have faced we found a way to be with one another, even if it was only over the phone.  When we get married we want it to be really special for us, considering we never get to see each other. Out of the 7 years that we have been together, more than half of it has been while we have been apart.”  They are also committed to the capital region.  Despite having traveled a lot, this is their home and they would love to be married here.

Meet the Finalists: Andrea & Cameron

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Andrea and Cameron are another couple in the running for our Luxury for Less Dream Date Giveaway.

Andrea and Cameron both work for a local Credit Union and met when Andrea was transferred to the accounting department.

After a year, Cameron had bought a ring and was getting anxious to ask Andrea to marry him.  On December 9th, 2009, in the middle of a snowstorm, he asked her to dinner.  As they were waiting for dessert Andrea started joking with him about a time frame she had for her life milestones, including when she wanted to get married.  Cameron said “Is it okay if I ask you before that time frame is up?”  A little taken aback Andrea answered “What, like tommorow?” then Cameron got down on one knee and said, “What if I ask you right now?”

Andrea says she knew Cameron was the one because “he has made me laugh everyday since we started dating. He is thoughtful, romantic, funny, intelligent, and looks at me with adoring eyes.” Andrea has the whole dream, the white dress, the friends and family, the party, the cake. She wants “to look back and remember [this day] with happiness for the rest of my life.”

When asked why she thought she and Cameron should win, “I feel as though my life has brought me so many hurdles that I want  this moment to easy and meant-to-be.  I have fought for my life, my schooling, my career, and my family.  I have finally found the man of my dreams, and I want this day to be memorable for all the wonderful reasons.”

Meet the Finalists: Camisha and Clarence

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Meet another one of our Luxury for Less Final Couples, Camisha and Clarence.

These two met, actually, via email.  Here’s a cute story for you.  As a side business, Clarence hosts parties and events.  One day he was have a “best dressed contest” and Camisha wanted to win!!  She got all decked out in her little black dress and went down to the contest.  When a different girl in plain business casual dress won the contest, she was mad! Camisha immediately sent Clarence an email saying how she felt she should have won, Clarence asked for a picture and guess what? She won Clarence.

It’s been two years since then.  Clarence told her he was having a themed party for the month of April, called “April Diamond Showers”.  When Camisha asked what he meant he just said “you’ll see.”  Well, Camisha knew exactly what that meant.  For all thirty days of April, she waited it out, to see just when he would propose.  On the last night of April, she told him she was coming over to “talk”.  When she got there, he pulled out a box and said “April Diamond Showers.  I told you that you’d see what it meant. Will you marry me?”

Clarence says that he knew Camisha was the one because she made him want to actually get married, because he can stare at her forever and still think she’s beautiful, because he couldn’t concentrate at work thinking about her, and because with her, he learned how to trust again.  This is a second wedding for both Camisha and Clarence, and they both have children, a big wedding just wasn’t going to work for them.  They planned to get married this past July, ordered flowers, put down deposits for a venue and a photographer, but it didn’t work out and they ended up losing a lot of money.  Now, this is the only way to make their dream wedding day a reality.

And what does their dream day look like you might ask?  Think old Hollywood.  Lot of roses, pearls, crystals, and rich fabrics.  To Camisha, winning this would be wonderful.  Always focusing on her children and other people, she never focuses on just herself.  This dream wedding would be the one day that would finally be all about her and Clarence.

Meet the Finalists: Matt & Alana

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Matt and Alana are another couple in the running for our Luxury for Less wedding giveaway.  These two have such a cute story!!

This music teacher met his social worker bride when they were both cast in a musical called “The Spitfire Grill” put on by the Not So Common Players in Clifton Park.  Music theater is a big part of who Matt and Alana are as a couple, so it only makes sense for their proposal to be themed that way.  Check out this adorable video.

When I asked Matt when he realized that Alana was the one, he said “Of course there are the obvious answers, because I love her, because she is beautiful inside and out, because she trusts and supports me in all that I do.  But there is something more than her amazing qualities that make her “the one”.  Simply put it’s that I can’t live without her.  It’s when I realized that I can’t envision any future for myself in which she isn’t by my side.”

Their dream day includes, of course, the musical theater theme, maybe in the form of karaoke.  They also really want to make it personal, a family friend making the cake, another family friend as the officiant, and Alana’s two Jack Russell Terriers in the mix somewhere.

When asked why they deserve to win this wedding, Matt said “Alana and I have many great things in our lives.  We have loving, supportive families and so many wonderful friends.  We’re fortunate enough to both have jobs and to be able to provide ourselves with an apartment, food and all that is essential.  We’d really love to have our “dream wedding,” but it is beyond our means to do all that we want.  We need to think about the future and cannot put ourselves in debt, even if that means cutting a lot of corners in our planning.  It would mean so much for us to be able to do all that we want – especially to be able to invite all of our loved ones.  There are people in this world who are much less fortunate and we can’t, in good conscience, say that we deserve it more than anyone else.  However, we’d like to think that we’re good, caring, hard-working people and that we deserve it at least as much as anyone else.”
