The Rice Toss

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Ever wonder who came up with the idea of throwing rice at newlyweds?  Well it all started with the Egyptians and the Romans.  It was believed that grains like wheat and rice symbolized fertility and prosperity.  The throwing of rice was used to feed uninvited spirits who attended the ceremony.  The thought behind this was that it would ward off evil spirits because well fed spirits would not bring harm to the couple….that sounds about right. I know I am far more reasonable when well fed, just ask my husband!

We in America seem to have gotten lucky when it comes to the celebratory rice toss.  At least we only have to deal with rice.  In other cultures they throw other, slightly more messy, foods.  For example, in Morocco it is common to throw figs, dates, and raisins to encourage a “fruitful” union.   In some other European countries, eggs are thrown at the couple couple to represent new life.  EGGS!?  Can you imagine what that does to a pristine white dress?  Great for your hair, not so awesome for that Vera Wang.

Today, the rice toss symbolizes prosperity and abundance.  There was an urban legend floating around for a while that when birds ate the uncooked, discarded rice, it would expand in their stomachs and they would explode.   This myth has been completely debunked!  Regardless of that, people have started to throw other things at the newlyweds.  Personally, I think this is a great idea because rice stings!

Fun Fact: Now there is a company that makes Designer Wedding Rice.  It is heart shaped, environmentally safe rice.  It is easy to clean up and won’t roll when stepped on-safety first!

Another alternative is bubbles.  They are a non toxic solution, they won’t stain any dresses or tuxes, and they can be decorated.  Look at this great find, champagne bottles of bubbles that double as place card holders! (They also make great favors, to find them for purchase click here.)

Another popular item to toss is confetti.  Confetti is great because you can get it in any color!  It can match your theme or color scheme though it does have the tendency to get a little messy!

This past winter at Saratoga National Golf Club, we had bride who made her own pom-pom confetti.  Remember this?

Modernizing the Guestbook

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Historically, the tradition of the tradition of the guestbook was started for legal purposes. In the olden days every guest at a wedding was considered a legal witness, thus they had to leave their name and address on the marriage certificate. In modern times, guestbooks serve as a great memento and keepsake for newlyweds to look back on their day and get great advice and well wishes from their family and friends.

While many people still get actual guestbooks for their guests to sign, lots of couples are branching out into things other than books which they in turn can incorporate into their home.  Here are some fun, modernized ideas to try in place of the guestbook.

  • Frames- Frame a photo of the couple, with an over sized mat.  Guests can use nice calligraphy pens or colored pens in the wedding colors to sign their well wishes right on the mat.  Then it can be hung in the couple’s house as a reminder of the day.
  • Video Guestbook- This is a very neat idea! Either set up a stationary video camera or have your videographer do this for you, then guests can leave the couple a live message.  This is a great way to capture moments, and can be viewed any time.  (If you’re an Mac user, check out this site, software for your video guestbook and download a free demo.)
  • Ordinary Items-  If you have any sort of theme to your wedding, for example, maybe you are getting married at a baseball field, use home plate and have your guest sign it.  Then it can be displayed in your home.
  • Puzzles-  Put out puzzle pieces and have guests sign their well wishes, then put them all together for a neat looking display!
  • Quilt- Here’s a great one for winter weddings and Adirondack weddings, have guests sign pieces of fabric.  Then, if you’re crafty (or perhaps you know someone who is) have them sewn together to make a quilt that can be kept in your house and used to snuggle up together on cold nights!
  • Furniture- Here’s an idea I came across that is perfect for Adirondack and Saratoga weddings.  Buy a piece of wooden furniture, in this case it was a bench, but how about an Adirondack chair?  Guest can then sign the piece of furniture itself and it can be sealed after and used for years to come.

One of our couples here at The Hall of Springs, Courtney and Jack, are having their guests write them a message on a dry erase board, take a picture with their message and leave it for them.  They will then take all the pictures and make their own coffee table book, what a great idea! I love it!  At Saratoga National we have a couple doing a fingerprint tree for their big day in January (so cute!)…

Did you do something fun for a guestbook at your wedding? Or do you have something planned?  Leave us your ideas in the comment section!

This gown looked amazing on Kara-she totally rocked this style!

Peeking around the corner as they head down the aisle…too cute!

Guests were greeted with champagne, an acoustic guitar set by Mitch Frasier (which was amazing!) and life size cut outs of Kara and Paul! They were later used in their photo booth and were a huge hit!

The Grand Ballroom at Saratoga National was completely transformed by Total Events with all white draping, lighting, the black and white dance floor. David at Renaissance decked it out with lush linens and his always beautiful flowers.

Mitch Frasier also provided the tunes for the evening in the ballroom…

Paul’s dad decided to ditch his notes and go rogue for his toast…note the panic on Paul’s face!

A New Kind of Cake

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

A number of brides and grooms these days are doing fun desserts that can stand in place of cake or can be served in addition.   I am always of the mindset “the more sweets the better” but if you’re starting to feel like the wedding cake is a thing of the past, try out these popular options…

Cupcakes!  Cupcakes are unbelievably popular right now, and why wouldn’t they be?  They are mini, made out of cake and usually topped with some awesome icing…count me in!  Cupcakes are a great idea because they don’t have to look like a cake, but they can.  There are so many different flavor and filling combinations AND they can be displayed on towers, tiered stands, any way you choose. Sometimes cupcakes accompany a single layer of cake so the bride and groom still have something to enjoy on their anniversary or something for the traditional first cut.

Also, there are many different ways to dress up your cupcake now-a-days, it’s not just your average foil wrapper!

In addition to or instead of decorative wrappers, you could cap your cupcakes with really neat designs.  Remember these?

Stemming from the same idea of cupcakes is this great find from Martha Stewart Weddings.  Sugar cookies shaped like wedding cakes!  They can be all the same decoration or a variety of designs to match your wedding patterns or colors.  Need another argument for cookies? They can double as your favors!

Another kind of “cake” that is becoming an increasingly popular station at The Hall of Springs is cheesecake! We have more and more requests for our cheesecake martini bar, which includes squares of cheesecake served in martini glasses with a variety of fruit toppings, chocolate, nuts, and whipped cream for your guests to make exactly how they like it!

No matter how you slice it, cake (or cupcakes, cookie cakes, cheesecake, etc.) will always have a place in the American wedding tradition…now we just have some more interesting options!
